What is Yoga?
Yoga. Strong Body. Calm mind. Balanced life. For everyone
Yoga is a method of discipline developed over 5,000 years ago in India. The word Yoga means “union” and refers to the union of body, mind and spirit, as well as a compassionate awareness that all persons are connected. Yoga is not a religion, but does encourage spiritual growth. It is not necessary to surrender your own religious beliefs to practice yoga. The physical practice (asana) is just one aspect of Yoga. We connect the movement of the body to the rhythm of our breath, balancing effort and surrender in each pose. This meditative approach calms the mind and heart and helps us to live more fully in the present moment. The benefits of Yoga are life-changing: newfound agility balanced by increased strength and coordination; greater flexibility enhanced cardiovascular health, sharper mental focus, greater self-confidence, and overall well-being.
At Pilates and Yoga for Life, we invite you to come as you are. All you need to begin practicing Yoga is your body, your mind and a bit of curiosity. Our Yoga classes are open to all levels.
I am incredibly grateful to study yoga with Dede. The beauty and benefits since beginning my yoga practice under her compassionate leadership three years ago are innumerable. It is a highlight of my week!
In Yoga class, we connect deep, rhythmic breathing with slow, controlled, sustained movements. This calms the mind, opens the heart and helps us learn to live more fully in the present moment. Yoga is a compassionate and non-competitive method of discipline. This is your personal journey that takes consistency and practice; accept where you are and appreciate the moment. Experience inner and outer transformation as your mental clarity, balance, strength and flexibility develop.
• Do not eat for 2 hours before class; have a light snack (fruit) if needed.
• Be early to class; bring your own mat.
• Wear comfortable exercise clothes that move with you; nothing baggy. Refrain from wearing perfume.
• Remove shoes at the door; we practice in our bare feet.
• Turn off your cell phone or leave in the car.
• Notify one of us before class if you have a health issue (injury or medical condition).
• Do not come to class if you are ill.
All classes are 75 minutes unless otherwise indicated and end with Savasana, a time of stillness and rest.
Level 2-3 class that links breath with movement. A dynamic flow, this practice combines powerful Vinyasa with deep Yin-style stretching. The room is heated to sweat toxins and stress out of your body and mind. Also, great for weight loss. Bring a towel and plenty of water.
Open to everyone including beginners, this class integrates the principles of alignment into a Vinyasa flow practice. This style allows students to take their practice to the next level, preparing them for more challenging poses. Some prior Yoga experience is helpful, but not necessary. The teacher will assist newer students with modifications during class.
Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement”. Vinyasa yoga is a series of poses that moves with your natural breathing rhythm. Breathing (“prana”) is one of the most important aspect of yoga practice. It purifies, energizes, connects your mental and physical health and it is a point of focus during meditation. In this class, you will flow through each yoga pose while finding the rhythm of your breathing and your body. With continuous practice, you will find the ability to increase your awareness of your body and mind through grounding yourself with breathing and physical strength. The class is appropriate for all level yogis.
A 30 or 55-minute Private session is an excellent way to gain a foundation for your practice: greatly enhances knowledge of poses, confidence and correct alignment. Highly recommended for all new students. Available by appointment.

My teachers are all very well educated in their respective areas of movement and they express a genuine desire to see you succeed. They give personal attention and cue you when needed. The teachers create an environment to safely explore your movement limits. Also, the space is attractive, well equipped and clean. Two thumbs up!!!
